Gove won't say how Tories will pay for education policies - Laws

12 Oct 2009

Commenting on Michael Gove's speech to the Conservative party conference, Liberal Democrat Shadow Schools Secretary, David Laws said:

"Michael Gove waxes lyrical about cutting bureaucracy and giving teachers more freedom, but then announces a long list of what he wants included in the curriculum and dictates how headteachers should run their schools.

"If the Tories were serious about closing the achievement gap between rich and poor they would explain how they will pay for their shopping list of proposals.

"Without committing any money, this speech amounts to nothing more than warm words mixed with a few gimmicks to cheer the party faithful."
